Il dipinto raffigura un rarissimo soggetto tratto dalla storia greca: la fuga del famoso avvocato e filosofo Briante da Priene, città greca in Asia Minore, sulle anse del fiume Meandro.
Vissuto nel VI secolo a. C., Briante fu famoso per la saggezza e l'abilità retorica in tribunale e strategica durante gli assedi. A lui Cicerone attribuisce la frase che si legge sul cartiglio: "omnia mea mecum porto" (porto con me tutti i miei beni), frase usata per esaltare la povertà e la superiorità dello spirito sui beni materiali.
Il personaggio porta infatti in mano una bilancia, simbolo della Giustizia, e probabilmente uno specchio, simbolo della Verità e della Prudenza.

The painting depicts a very rare subject drawn from Greek history: the flight of the famous lawyer and philosopher Briantes from Priene, a Greek city in Asia Minor on the bends of the Meander River.
Living in the 6th century B.C., Briantes was renowned for his wisdom, rhetorical skill in court, and strategic acumen during sieges. Cicero attributes to him the phrase inscribed on the scroll: "omnia mea mecum porto" ("I carry all my belongings with me"), a saying used to extol poverty and the superiority of the spirit over material possessions.
The figure holds a balance scale, symbolizing Justice, and likely a mirror, symbolizing Truth and Prudence.
