Arte del secolo XVIII. Cammeo ovale in sardonica scolpito raffigurante il busto di un guerriero barbuto, probabilmente Pirro, re dell'Epiro (318-272 a.C.) L'elmo, adornato con una cresta e una sfinge accovacciata, presenta una scena di combattimento a rilievo tra un leone e un serpente. Al centro della corazza si trova un mantello, sopra il quale è posta una maschera di Ercole, di profilo rivolto a destra. Questa è inserita in una montatura ovale in oro, su uno sfondo di agata tigrata, all'interno di una cornice antica di forma ottagonale in bronzo dorato, decorata con fogliame e bordata da fermagli a spagnoletta uniti da volute di foglie d'acanto tra volti a rilievo (cammeo cm 6,5x4,5; cm tot 19x19) (lievi difetti)

Questo intaglio presenta un'identità stilistica con un'opera di William o Charles Brown, datata 1796 e attualmente conservata presso l'Hermitage di San Pietroburgo. L'identificazione di Pirro è ulteriormente corroborata da R.E. Raspe e James Tassie nel loro A Descriptive Catalogue of a General Collection of Ancient and Modern Engraved Gems... fuso da J. Tassie (Londra, 1791), catalogo n. 9762.

Art of the 18th century. Oval carved sardonic cameo depicting the bust of a bearded warrior, probably Pyrrhus, king of Epirus (318 - 272 BC) The helmet, adorned with a crest and a crouching sphinx, features a relief fight scene between a lion and a serpent. In the center of the armor there is a cloak, above which is placed a mask of Hercules, facing right. This is inserted in an oval gold frame, on a background of tiger agate, inside an octagonal antique frame in gilded bronze, decorated with foliage and edged with spagnoletta clasps joined by volutes of acanthus leaves between faces in relief (cammeo 6.5x4.5 cm; cm tot 19x19) (minor defects)

This carving presents a stylistic identity with a work by William or Charles Brown, dated 1796 and currently preserved in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Pyrrhus' identification is further corroborated by RE. Raspe and James Tassie in their A Descriptive Catalogue of a General Collection of Ancient and Modern Engraved Gems... cast by J. Tassie (London, 1791), catalogue No. 9762.
