La coppa fu offerta nel 1929 dalla Leicester Rubber Co. Ltd., celebre produttrice britannica dei pneumatici John Bull, al Kent Motor Club Ltd. quale trofeo per l'Annual Open Centre Competition, una delle prove di regolarità e abilità organizzate dai club automobilistici inglesi nel vivace panorama del motorismo amatoriale tra le due guerre. L'iniziativa costituiva anche un'importante operazione promozionale della casa produttrice, che in quegli anni sosteneva numerose competizioni automobilistiche e motociclistiche per promuovere i propri pneumatici. The cup was presented in 1929 by Leicester Rubber Co. Ltd., the renowned British manufacturer of John Bull tyres, to the Kent Motor Club Ltd. as a trophy for the Annual Open Centre Competition, one of the trials of reliability and skill organised by English motoring clubs during the vibrant period of amateur motor sport between the two World Wars. The initiative also represented an important promotional activity for the manufacturer, which during those years supported numerous automobile and motorcycle competitions to promote its tyres. The Leicester Rubber Company, founded in 1906, began producing automobile tyres in 1928 and only in 1934 officially adopted the name John Bull Rubber Company, after the brand that had made its products famous

La coppa fu realizzata dalla celebre manifattura anglo-indiana P. Orr & Sons di Madras, uno dei più importanti argentieri attivi nell'India britannica tra XIX e XX secolo, specializzato nella produzione di argenteria di lusso destinata agli ufficiali dell'Esercito, all'amministrazione coloniale e ai maharaja.

L'iscrizione "Inter Regimental Challenge Cup" e la presa del coperchio costituita da tre fucili incrociati suggeriscono che il trofeo fosse destinato a una competizione di tiro tra reparti dell'Esercito britannico di stanza nell'India coloniale. Alla fine del XIX secolo le gare di tiro rivestivano un ruolo fondamentale nell'addestramento militare e costituivano al contempo importanti occasioni di confronto sportivo e di rappresentanza tra i diversi reggimenti. I trofei destinati a tali competizioni venivano tradizionalmente assegnati come Challenge Cup, ossia coppe itineranti che rimanevano al reparto vincitore fino all'edizione successiva della gara

The cup was made by the celebrated Anglo-Indian manufactory P. Orr & Sons of Madras, one of the most important silversmiths active in British India between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, specialising in the production of luxury silverware intended for army officers, the colonial administration and maharajas.

The inscription "Inter Regimental Challenge Cup" and the cover finial formed by three crossed rifles suggest that the trophy was intended for a shooting competition between units of the British Army stationed in colonial India. At the end of the nineteenth century, shooting competitions played a fundamental role in military training and simultaneously represented important occasions for sporting rivalry and ceremonial display among the various regiments. Trophies intended for such competitions were traditionally awarded as Challenge Cups, namely perpetual trophies that remained in the possession of the winning unit until the following edition of the competition.
