La coppa è legata alla Watt Memorial Cup, storico trofeo assegnato nell'ambito delle corse di Beverley Racecourse (Yorkshire), uno degli ippodromi più antichi d'Inghilterra, attivo fin dal XVII secolo. La competizione nacque in seguito al lascito testamentario di William Watt, figlio del celebre allevatore Richard "Squire" Watt, proprietario di quattro vincitori del prestigioso St Leger Stakes tra il 1813 e il 1833. Nel suo testamento del 1874 William Watt destinò 3.000 sterline alla Beverley Race Company affinché gli interessi finanziassero annualmente un importante premio in argento denominato Watt Memorial Plate, disputato per la prima volta nel 1876. La corsa è tuttora disputata presso il Beverley Racecourse con la denominazione di Watt Memorial Handicap Stakes, confermando la continuità di una delle competizioni più longeve del calendario ippico britannico.

The cup is associated with the Watt Memorial Cup, a historic trophy awarded as part of the races at Beverley Racecourse (Yorkshire), one of the oldest racecourses in England, active since the seventeenth century. The competition was established following the testamentary bequest of William Watt, son of the celebrated breeder Richard “Squire” Watt, owner of four winners of the prestigious St Leger Stakes between 1813 and 1833. In his will of 1874, William Watt left £3,000 to the Beverley Race Company, the interest from which was to fund an important annual silver prize named the Watt Memorial Plate, first contested in 1876. The race is still held today at Beverley Racecourse under the name of the Watt Memorial Handicap Stakes, confirming the continuity of one of the longest-running competitions in the British racing calendar.

La nostra coppa fu donata dal ramo della famiglia Savoia-Aosta in occasione delle nozze tra Tommaso di Savoia, Duca di Genova, e Isabella di Baviera, principessa della casata dei Wittelsbach, che si tennero a Nymphenburg il 14 aprile 1883. Da questa unione, celebrata per unire i rami di Casa Savoia e della casa reale bavarese, nacquero sei figli, tra cui Ferdinando (Duca di Genova) e Filiberto (Duca di Pistoia) ma segnò la fine di questa linea dinastica poiché nessuno dei figli maschi ebbe discendenza.

This cup was presented by the Savoy-Aosta branch of the House of Savoy on the occasion of the wedding of Prince Thomas of Savoy, Duke of Genoa, and Princess Isabella of Bavaria of the House of Wittelsbach, celebrated at Nymphenburg on 14 April 1883. The marriage, intended to strengthen the ties between the House of Savoy and the Bavarian royal family, resulted in six children, including Ferdinando, Duke of Genoa, and Filiberto, Duke of Pistoia. This dynastic line, however, came to an end, as none of the male heirs left descendants.

La coupe fut offerte par la branche Savoie-Aoste de la Maison de Savoie à l'occasion du mariage de Thomas de Savoie, duc de Gênes, et d'Isabelle de Bavière, princesse de la maison de Wittelsbach, célébré au château de Nymphenburg le 14 avril 1883. Cette union, destinée à resserrer les liens entre la Maison de Savoie et la famille royale bavaroise, donna naissance à six enfants, dont Ferdinand, duc de Gênes, et Philibert, duc de Pistoia. The Penang Turf Club, founded in 1864 in the former British colony of the Straits Settlements, is the oldest racing club in Malaysia and one of the most prestigious in Asia. Established to commemorate the beginning of the twentieth century, the Century Cup was among the principal prizes of the January Meeting of 1901. Made by Carrington & Co. in London in 1899, the present trophy relates to the first edition of the competition and bears witness to the prestige of horse racing within the British Empire in the Far East

Nel corso della lunga tournée americana dell’Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, il 15 gennaio 1921 Arturo Toscanini si trovava a Philadelphia, una delle città nelle quali la comunità italiana era più numerosa e culturalmente attiva.

La tournée, iniziata nell’ottobre del 1920, rappresentò un’impresa musicale e organizzativa eccezionale. Dopo una serie di concerti in Italia, Toscanini e i musicisti della Scala salparono da Napoli alla volta degli Stati Uniti a bordo del piroscafo Presidente Wilson.

Il viaggio si protrasse per 237 giorni, dal 23 ottobre 1920 al 16 giugno 1921, durante i quali l’Orchestra della Scala tenne 125 concerti in 68 città, affrontando due traversate dell’Atlantico e circa 24.000 chilometri in treno. Anche il viaggio ebbe i suoi momenti pittoreschi: al mal di mare Toscanini suggerì di porre rimedio brindando con il vin santo donatogli da Gabriele D’Annunzio.

Negli Stati Uniti la presenza della Scala e di Toscanini assunse un significato che andava oltre il semplice avvenimento musicale. Per le numerose comunità italiane d’America, l’arrivo dell’orchestra del più celebre teatro italiano rappresentava un motivo di orgoglio e un’occasione per riaffermare il legame con il Paese d’origine.

È in questo clima di entusiasmo e ammirazione che, il 15 gennaio 1921, i musicisti italiani di Philadelphia vollero rendere omaggio al Maestro con una coppa con dedica

Un omaggio che, a distanza di oltre un secolo, conserva la memoria di una delle più straordinarie imprese musicali dell’epoca e dell’ammirazione tributata a Toscanini dalla comunità musicale italiana d’America.

During the long American tour of the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala, on 15 January 1921 Arturo Toscanini was in Philadelphia, one of the cities with the largest and most culturally active Italian communities.

The tour, which began in October 1920, represented an exceptional musical and organisational achievement. After a series of concerts in Italy, Toscanini and the musicians of La Scala sailed from Naples to the United States aboard the steamship Presidente Wilson.

The journey lasted 237 days, from 23 October 1920 to 16 June 1921, during which the La Scala Orchestra gave 125 concerts in 68 cities, undertaking two Atlantic crossings and travelling approximately 24,000 kilometres by train. The voyage itself also had its picturesque moments: when faced with seasickness, Toscanini suggested a remedy of toasting with the vin santo given to him by Gabriele D’Annunzio.

In the United States, the presence of La Scala and Toscanini took on a significance that went beyond a mere musical event. For the numerous Italian communities in America, the arrival of the orchestra of Italy’s most celebrated theatre represented a source of pride and an opportunity to reaffirm their connection with their country of origin.

It was in this atmosphere of enthusiasm and admiration that, on 15 January 1921, the Italian musicians of Philadelphia wished to pay tribute to the Maestro with a presentation cup bearing a commemorative inscription.

A tribute which, more than a century later, preserves the memory of one of the most extraordinary musical enterprises of the period and of the admiration bestowed upon Toscanini by the Italian-American musical community.

This cup was presented by his supporters to William Brown (1809/1810–1898), an influential Scottish merchant who emigrated to New Zealand, writer, newspaper publisher, politician and Superintendent of the Province of Auckland, during a ceremony held at the Odd Fellows' Hall in Auckland on Wednesday, 16 May 1855.

This trophy was awarded by the Central Agricultural Society of Bloemfontein (South Africa) at the 1910 agricultural show for the "Best Group of Cattle of One European Breed". Founded in 1909, the Central Agricultural Society organized the principal agricultural exhibition of the Orange Free State, which became one of the most prestigious livestock events in early twentieth-century South Africa, dedicated to the selection and improvement of European cattle breeds.
