Giovan Francesco Tura, known as Tura Mantovano, formerly Orombelli Master
(documented in Mantua 1525-1542)

A Padan painter inspired by the works produced in Mantua by Lorenzo Costa the Younger, Dosso Dossi and Correggio, Tura Mantovano represents a perfect example of a harmonious synthesis of different artistic currents and styles, fused together like the waters of the three lakes surrounding the ancient Gonzaga capital.

As Professor Lucco notes (oral communication), our panel is closely related to the Adoration of the Shepherds in the Horne Museum, Florence, and can be dated to the second decade of the sixteenth century, probably between 1515 and 1520. Many works by the artist are preserved in churches in Mantua and throughout the surrounding province.

We are most grateful to Professor Mauro Lucco for the attribution of this rare panel, made on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
