"Giulio Cesare"

"Julius Caesar"
oil on canvas (42x34 cm.)
in an important carved and giltwood frame, with restorations

Julius Caesar is part of a series of eleven half-length portraits of Roman emperors painted by Titian between 1536 and 1540 for Federico II, Duke of Mantua. Inspired by Suetonius's Lives of the Caesars, the portraits were among Titian's best-known works and were originally displayed in a newly created room in the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua. Bernardino Campi added a twelfth portrait in 1562. The paintings met an unfortunate fate: sold to Charles I of England in 1627-28, they subsequently passed to Spain, where they were destroyed in the fire that devastated the Alcázar in 1734.
The entire series is known through the engravings made by Aegidius Sadeler (Antwerp, 1570 - Prague, 1629) during his stay in Mantua between 1593 and 1594. All twenty-four prints, together with the portraits of the twelve empresses, were acquired and reprinted by Marcus Sadeler around 1640, who certainly retouched and re-engraved them.
Domenico Fetti copied Campi's portrait of Domitian in 1616-17 (Milantoni, 1997). When the sale of the series was decided upon in 1627, a new series may have been conceived to commemorate the undertaking at the Gonzaga palace.
The present small canvas may be evidence of such a project. Fetti had already been in Venice since 1621 and entrusted the work to his close circle of collaborators, among whom his daughter Lucrina played a prominent role. Nevertheless, his direct involvement cannot be ruled out, given the high quality of the painting and the fluent combination of Rubensian brushwork and Venetian colour characteristic of his works from the Venetian period (Safarik, 1991).
