Realizzato a Londra nel 1875 dall'argentiere Robert Hennell IV, questo importante trofeo fu commissionato quale Bankers Cup, premio destinato alle corse dell'Autumn Meeting dello Shanghai Race Club, una delle più prestigiose manifestazioni ippiche dell'Estremo Oriente britannico. Il trofeo costituisce una significativa testimonianza della presenza britannica nella Shanghai del XIX secolo, unendo il prestigio dell'argenteria vittoriana alla storia delle corse ippiche e della comunità internazionale che animava la città negli anni del suo massimo sviluppo economico
La Bankers Cup era offerta dai principali istituti bancari operanti nella Shanghai internazionale, a testimonianza del ruolo centrale della finanza nello sviluppo della città quale grande emporio commerciale dell'Asia orientale. L'iscrizione incisa sul corpo del rinfrescatoio ricorda la vittoria del cavallo Ravenshoe, di proprietà di John R. Bromley e Septimus Daly, montato dal fantino J. E. Walter.

Made in London in 1875 by the silversmith Robert Hennell IV, this important trophy was commissioned as the Bankers Cup, a prize awarded at the Autumn Meeting of the Shanghai Race Club, one of the most prestigious horse-racing events in the British Far East. The trophy represents a significant testament to the British presence in 19th-century Shanghai, combining the prestige of Victorian silverware with the history of horse racing and of the international community that shaped the city during the height of its economic development.
The Bankers Cup was presented by the leading banking institutions operating in international Shanghai, reflecting the central role of finance in the citys growth as a major commercial hub of East Asia. The inscription engraved on the body of the wine cooler commemorates the victory of the horse Ravenshoe, owned by John R. Bromley and Septimus Daly, and ridden by jockey J. E. Walter.
