La coppa fu realizzata quale trofeo del Epsom & District Rifle Club, storico sodalizio di tiro fondato nel 1899 per promuovere il tiro sportivo e l'addestramento al maneggio delle armi tra i cittadini del distretto di Epsom, nel Surrey. La dicitura "Scratch Challenge Cup" indica una competizione disputata scratch, ossia senza handicap, nella quale tutti i concorrenti gareggiavano ad armi pari. Nel corso del primo Novecento il club organizzò regolarmente gare di tiro, inserendosi nel diffuso movimento dei rifle clubs britannici, che coniugava attività sportiva, formazione civica e preparazione militare volontaria

The cup was made as a trophy for the Epsom & District Rifle Club, a historic shooting association founded in 1899 to promote target shooting and firearms training among the citizens of the Epsom district, Surrey. The inscription *"Scratch Challenge Cup"* indicates a scratch competition, namely one held without handicap, in which all competitors participated on equal terms. Throughout the early twentieth century, the club regularly organised shooting competitions, forming part of the widespread movement of British rifle clubs, which combined sporting activity, civic training and voluntary military preparation.
