La coppa fu offerta nel 1929 dalla Leicester Rubber Co. Ltd., celebre produttrice britannica dei pneumatici John Bull, al Kent Motor Club Ltd. quale trofeo per l'Annual Open Centre Competition, una delle prove di regolarità e abilità organizzate dai club automobilistici inglesi nel vivace panorama del motorismo amatoriale tra le due guerre. L'iniziativa costituiva anche un'importante operazione promozionale della casa produttrice, che in quegli anni sosteneva numerose competizioni automobilistiche e motociclistiche per promuovere i propri pneumatici. La Leicester Rubber Company, fondata nel 1906, iniziò la produzione di pneumatici per automobili nel 1928 e solo nel 1934 assunse ufficialmente la denominazione John Bull Rubber Company, dal marchio che aveva reso celebri i suoi prodotti

The cup was presented in 1929 by Leicester Rubber Co. Ltd., the renowned British manufacturer of John Bull tyres, to the Kent Motor Club Ltd. as a trophy for the Annual Open Centre Competition, one of the trials of reliability and skill organised by English motoring clubs during the vibrant period of amateur motor sport between the two World Wars. The initiative also represented an important promotional activity for the manufacturer, which during those years supported numerous automobile and motorcycle competitions to promote its tyres. The Leicester Rubber Company, founded in 1906, began producing automobile tyres in 1928 and only in 1934 officially adopted the name John Bull Rubber Company, after the brand that had made its products famous
