La dedica incisa documenta che il vassoio fu donato l'8 aprile 1884 a Edward John Thompson, rappresentante della parrocchia di St. James and St. John, Clerkenwell presso il Metropolitan Board of Works, quale omaggio per il suo pensionamento . Il Metropolitan Board of Works, istituito nel 1855, fu il primo organismo di governo metropolitano di Londra, responsabile di importanti opere pubbliche quali il sistema fognario progettato da Joseph Bazalgette, il Thames Embankment e numerosi interventi di modernizzazione urbana

The engraved presentation inscription records that the tray was presented on 8 April 1884 to Edward John Thompson, representative of the parish of St. James and St. John, Clerkenwell, on the Metropolitan Board of Works, in recognition of his retirement. Established in 1855, the Metropolitan Board of Works was the first metropolitan governing authority for London, responsible for major public works including the sewer system designed by Joseph Bazalgette, the Thames Embankment, and numerous urban improvement projects."
