La coppa fu realizzata nel 1867 quale Challenge Cup destinata alle competizioni di tiro del 1st Administrative Battalion, A.R.V. (Administrative Battalion of Rifle Volunteers), formazione appartenente al movimento dei Rifle Volunteers, i corpi volontari britannici istituiti dal 1859 per la difesa territoriale e l'addestramento al tiro. Il trofeo venne donato dal Right Honourable Walter, 18th Lord Forbes (1798-1868), già ufficiale delle Coldstream Guards e veterano della battaglia di Waterloo, sostenitore delle istituzioni militari volontarie del Regno Unito. Le incisioni sul retro riportano i nomi dei vincitori dal 1869 al 1911, documentando oltre quarant'anni di competizioni interne al battaglione e conferendo al manufatto un notevole valore storico e documentario quale testimonianza dell'attività agonistica dei Rifle Volunteers britannici nel periodo precedente alla costituzione delle Territorial Forces nel 1908

This trophy was commissioned in 1867 as the Challenge Cup for the shooting competitions of the 1st Administrative Battalion, A.R.V. (Administrative Battalion of Rifle Volunteers), a formation within the Rifle Volunteers movement, the British volunteer corps established in 1859 for home defence and marksmanship training. It was presented by the Right Honourable Walter, 18th Lord Forbes (1798–1868), a former officer of the Coldstream Guards, veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, and a prominent supporter of Britain's volunteer military institutions.

The engraved inscriptions on the reverse record the names of the winners from 1869 to 1911, documenting more than four decades of competition within the battalion. As such, the trophy possesses considerable historical and documentary significance, providing a tangible record of the sporting and competitive traditions of the British Rifle Volunteers in the years preceding the establishment of the Territorial Force in 1908.
