The capture of Nicosia Oil on canvas cm. 44x47. Framed This panel can be attributed to the circle of Jan van Huchtenburgh, one of the leading Dutch specialists in battle scenes between the 17th and 18th centuries. It depicts the Capture of Nicosia, a key episode of the War of Cyprus: on 22 July 1570 the Ottoman army, led by Kara Mustafa Pasha, shown prominently in the foreground, advanced on the city, whose Venetian-held fortress appears in the distance. The dynamic cavalry action, rapid brushwork, warm palette and dramatic sky create a powerful and highly evocative composition.
