L'opera trova preciso riferimento con la tavola Still Life of Flowers in a Glass Vase with Insects and Fruits in a Stone Niche, lotto n. 14, di 34,2 x 26,8 cm, firmato "J.D.De Heem.R" in basso a destra passato in asta il 07/12/2022 presso Sotheby's di Londra.

Jan fu probabilmente allievo di Balthasar van der Weyden a Leida, vista la somiglianza delle sue prime opere con quelle del maestro. Nel 1626 si trasferì a Leida, dove dipinse nature morte con soggetti di vanitas, strumenti musicali, teschi e clessidre, seguendo la scia dei contemporanei artisti locali come David Bailly e Harmen Steenwijck. Intorno al 1635 lasciò l'Olanda e prese residenza ad Anversa, dove ebbe la sensibilità di cogliere l'influenza di Daniel Seghers, dipingendo opere più elaborate all’insegna delle ghirlande di fiori, cesti di frutta, insetti e drappeggi con grande veridicità illusionistica e note cromatiche più varie e vivaci. Tra i suoi numerosi allievi e seguaci vi furono Abraham Mignon, Cerstiaen Luyckx e Joris van Son.
