L'attribuzione si basa sulla presenza della mucca volta a guardare l'ipotetico spettatore. Questo piccolo particolare fu più volte utilizzato da Dujardin nelle sue opere e può essere ritenuto una sua peculiarità identificativa. La città ritratta sullo sfondo presenta molte caratteristiche che fanno propendere possa trattarsi di Verona; non è escluso che Karel l'avesse dipinta durante il soggiorno veneto degli ultimi anni di vita.
Dopo il suo alunnato presso Nicolaes Berchem, Karel si trasferì in Italia nel 1642, dove, seppur giovanissimo, entrò nella comunità d'artisti Bentvueghels di Roma. Successivamente viaggiò e soggiornò in Francia e nei Paesi Bassi, ritornò a Roma nel 1675 per risiedere poi a Venezia fino alla morte. La sua arte è una sintesi mirabile della sua predisposizione paesaggistica e del suo interesse per la pittura bambocciante.

The attribution is based on the presence of the cow turning to look at the hypothetical viewer. This small detail was used repeatedly by Dujardin in his works and can be considered one of his identifying hallmarks. The city depicted in the background shows many features that suggest it may be Verona; it is not excluded that Karel painted it during his Venetian stay in the final years of his life.
