Lot 766 Antonio Berini (Roma 1770 - Milano 1830)
Firmato in basso "B.ER". Montato su pannello in velluto. In cornice ovale ebanizzata
(h. cm 3,5, cornice cm 10x12) (lievi difetti)

Antonio Berini (Rome, 1770 - Milan, 1830)
Cameo depicting the profile bust of Napoleon wearing a bicorn hat. Signed "B.ER" at the bottom. Mounted on a velvet panel. In an oval ebonized frame.
(h. 3.5 cm, frame 10x12 cm) (minor defects)
Antonio Berini, a Roman engraver and pupil of Giovanni Pichler, settled in Milan at a young age, where he worked for prominent members of the local nobility, including Count Giovanni Battista Sommariva. Outspokenly anti-monarchist, Berini was arrested in Milan in 1805 during Napoleon's coronation as King of Italy. The arrest was triggered by a cameo featuring the sovereign's profile, commissioned by the city's archbishop: a natural red vein in the stone appeared along Bonaparte's neck, which authorities interpreted as a premeditated insult to the king. Very few pieces of his work survive today. Among his known works are:
• Three cameos in the British Museum (inv. no. 1978/1002.998), including one in sardonyx depicting Napoleon without any political overtones.
• A cameo with the bust of Odysseus (Ulysses) in the Capitoline Museums in Rome (inv. no. B37c), part of the Santarelli Collection.

Lot 774 Manifattura di Giovanni Volpato (1735-1803) Menandro e Posidippo, coppia di figure in biscuit.

Giovanni Volpato Manufactory (1735–1803)
Menander and Posidippus, a pair of biscuit porcelain figures. One with impressed signature "Volpato" (max. 17.5 x 23 cm) on Siena yellow marble plinth bases (total max. 20 x 30 cm) (defects).
The prototype for these biscuits is the Hellenistic-era marble now housed in the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Gallery of the Statues (inv. 588): the portrait of the playwright Menander, paired with the figure representing the Greek poet Posidippus (formerly called Sylla). The sculptures were discovered in 1588 near the vineyard of the monastery of San Lorenzo in Panisperna and remained at Villa Negroni until 1785, when both were purchased by Thomas Jenkins, before entering the Museo Pio-Clementino in 1789. The biscuit version (known to date in only two other examples from private Italian collections) is cited in both known catalogs of the factory, in French and Italian: in the Italian catalog, they are listed as "The two consuls Menander and Posidippus, improperly called Marius and Sylla of Villa Negroni."
Based on the Italian citation, our pair of biscuits should therefore be dated to the period prior to 1789. In both catalogs, the price for the pair is 12 zecchini, though it is worth noting that in the printed catalog in French, the two biscuits are listed individually at 6 zecchini each.
