Interessante pubblicazione di questa spedizione ufficiale alla scoperta del Niger partendo da Tripoli. Una buona copia completa di tutte le tavole.
2 parti in un volume, 4to (271 x 215mm). Grande mappa incisa ripiegata, 37 tavole incise in rame di cui una a colori, vignette xilografiche nel testo (alcune sporadiche macchie e lievi bruniture). Pelle coeva, filetti in oro ai piatti e dorso in oro (dorso restaurato, alcuni graffi). Provenienza: S. F. Philips (ex libris).

An official expedition to discover the course of the Niger from the starting point of Tripoli, rather than West Africa. Clapperton and Oudney were the original members of the party, to which Denham, who seemed to have had influential supporters, was added and given command, but whose "arrogance, malice, and contempt for his colleagues from the start soured relations between them" (ODNB).
2 parts in one volume, 4to (271 x 215mm). Large folding map and 37 engraved plates of which one coloured, woodcut illustrations (some occasional stains and light browning). Contemporary calf, gilt fillet borders and gilt spine (spine restored, some rubbing). Provenance: S.F. Philips (book label).

Prima edizione della prima pubblicazione inglese di qualsiasi viaggio di Doughy. L'opera precede la celebre "Arabia Deserta" di 4 anni. Ernest Renan, autore dell'introduzione, e Dought si conobbero nella primavera del 1883.

DOUGHTY, Charles Montagu (1843-1926) - Documents epigraphiques recueillis dans le nord de l'Arabie. Paris: n.d. [1884].
First edition and the first publication in English of any account of Doughty's travels, predating Travels in "Arabia Deserta" by four years. Doughty first met the great French orientalist and writer Ernest Renan in late spring 1883, and after the failure of his attempt to sell the copies of the inscriptions he had made in the region of El-Hejr and Medain Salih to Berlin, Renan wrote the preface and supervised the publication of Doughty's work in Paris.
4to (285 x 225mm). Half-title, 57 plates, mostly heliographed, of archeological inscriptions, sites and maps, some folding, original printed wrappers, uncut, partly unopened (rebacked).

Prima edizione inglese di questo racconto del viaggio di Hornemann che fu mandato a scoprire la fonte del Niger e fu il primo Europeo ad attraversare il Sahara del nord-est in tempi moderni.
4to (251 x 215mm). 3 mappe incise in rame di cui 2 grandi e ripiegate (qualche fioritura). Mezza pelle verde coeva, piatti marmorizzati, dorso in oro, tagli a spruzzo (un po' graffiata).

First English edition. Horneman was sent by the African Association to discover the source of the Niger and became the first European in modern times to traverse the northeastern Sahara.
4to (251 x 215mm). 3 engraved maps of which 2 large and folding (some spotting). Contemporary half green morocco, marbled boards, gilt spine, speckled edges (lightly rubbed).

HURGRONJE, Christian Snouck (1857-1936) - Mekka. L'Aia: [s.e.], 1888-1889.
Un’opera fondamentale sulla Mecca e la più esaustiva monografia illustrata dedicata alla Mecca del tempo. Rispettato orientalista olandese, Hurgronje rimase in Arabia tra il 1884 e il 1885 e fu uno dei primi fotografi non di origine araba ad avere accesso alla Mecca. Il primo volume di testo contiene uno studio della Mecca mentre il secondo descrive la vita quotidiana dei suoi abitanti per la maggior parte compilata da Abu Bakar, un informatore arabo dell’autore. Le tavole sono tra le prime pubblicate a mostrare immagini della Mecca e dei suoi pellegrini. Le foto furono fatte da Al-Sayyid Abd al-Ghaffar, un dottore della Mecca a cui Snouck Hurgronje insegnò le tecniche fotografiche nel 1885.

HURGRONJE, Christian Snouck (1857-1936) - Mekka. The Hague: [s.e.], 1888-1889.
A good copy of an important work by a key figure in the early history of photography of Mecca and one of the first non-Arab photographers of the Hijaz. A respected Dutch orientalist, Hurgronje spent 1884-5 in Arabia, and published the result of his travels in Mekka and the accompanying atlas of photographs Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka in 1888-1889. Compiled on the eve of Western modernisation of Arabia, this important work is the largest single illustrated monograph on Mecca of its time. The first volume contains an historical survey of Mecca, the second describes the daily life of the inhabitants, based for the most part on the notes compiled by Snouck Hurgronje's Muslim informant from the East Indies, Abu Bakar. The plates are amongst the earliest published photographs illustrating Mecca and pilgrims from all parts of the Islamic world. The photographs were taken by Al-Sayyid Abd al-Ghaffar, a doctor in Mecca who was taught photography by Snouck Hurgronje in 1885.

Text with half-titles, 2 folding plans, errata leaf at end of volume 1, modern black cloth (few leaves on modern guards, few occasional light small stains); atlas with printed contents leaf and 40 plates, comprising 65 mounted photographs on 30 leaves, 6 tinted lithographs, one double-page, and 4 chromolithographs, loose as issued in modern black cloth portfolio and preserving original cover (some plates with light foxing, contents leaf with tiny clean tear, few plates with small marginal repairs).

Marca tipografica al frontespizio, cartina ripiegata e incisa in rame dello Yemen e 3 tavole fuori testo, iniziali e fregi xilografici (alcune bruniture, macchie di umidità e fioriture, piccoli strappi alle pieghe delle tavole). Pelle coeva, dorso in oro (macchia di umidità e altri difetti). L'edizione dello stesso anno stampata ad Amsterdam ha un'antiporta calcografica non presente in questa copia dell'edizione parigina. LA ROQUE, Jean de (1661-1745) - Voyage de l'Arabie Heureuse. Paris: Andrè Cailleau, 1716.
Second edition of La Roque's writings on the French expeditions in Yemen in the years 1708 and 1713. The book concludes with a lengthy description of the cultivation and consumption of coffee in southern Arabia and is considered an important early work on the subject.
12mo (159 x 96mm). Woodcut device on title, folding engraved map and 3 engraved plates, woodcut headpieces and initials (some browning, waterstaining and spots, some small tears to fold of plates). Contemporary calf, gilt spine (some waterstaining and rubbing). The edition printed the same year in Amsterdam has an engraved frontispiece not present in this Parisian edition. Atabey 673.
