The cup was established as a prize for the Ledbury Christmas Show, a traditional agricultural exhibition held in Ledbury, Herefordshire (England), as part of the Christmas events dedicated to livestock breeding. The trophy, donated by Mr A. G. Parmee, was awarded for the category “Best Bunch of Four Fat Cattle”, namely the best group of four fattened cattle, one of the most prestigious competitions at British livestock shows of the period.

The trophy was awarded as part of the prestigious News of the World Individual Darts Championship, the most important British darts competition of the period, sponsored by the eponymous newspaper. Established in 1880, the Teignmouth and Shaldon Open Tournament was one of the most important British tennis tournaments of the Victorian era and the early 20th century. Held on the courts of the Teignmouth Lawn Tennis Club in Devon, it formed part of the traditional summer circuit in south-west England and regularly attracted some of the finest British and international tennis players, including Ernest Wool Lewis, William Renshaw, Wilberforce Eaves and Harold Michelmore. The competition continued until 1939, when it was discontinued at the outbreak of the Second World War.
