The Manchester Agricultural Society, established in 1805, was one of the earliest agricultural societies in north-west England dedicated to the improvement of livestock breeding and farming techniques. Il trofeo fu assegnato in occasione delle Ballingange Steeple-Chases della stagione 1890-1891, manifestazione ippica irlandese dedicata alle corse a ostacoli (steeplechase), disciplina che nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento costituiva uno degli eventi sportivi e mondani più seguiti dell'Irlanda. Inserite nel circuito del National Hunt, le riunioni di Ballingange richiamavano proprietari, allevatori e appassionati, affiancando, su scala locale, i più prestigiosi meeting di Punchestown e Fairyhouse.

La Suburban Cup fu offerta da John A. Ralli, esponente della celebre famiglia Ralli, dinastia di commercianti e finanzieri di origine greca con importanti interessi nel Regno Unito e nell'Impero britannico. L'iscrizione ricorda la vittoria del cavallo Caliph, appartenente a C. L. Johnstone e montato dal fantino C. Robinson, documentando un'edizione della competizione e conservando la memoria di uno dei protagonisti delle corse a ostacoli irlandesi di fine XIX secolo

The trophy was awarded on the occasion of the Ballingange Steeple-Chases of the 1890–1891 season, an Irish horse-racing event dedicated to steeplechase competitions, a discipline which in the second half of the 19th century represented one of the most popular sporting and social events in Ireland. Part of the National Hunt circuit, the Ballingange meetings attracted owners, breeders and enthusiasts, standing alongside, on a local scale, the more prestigious gatherings at Punchestown and Fairyhouse.



The Suburban Cup was presented by John A. Ralli, a member of the renowned Ralli family, a dynasty of Greek-origin merchants and financiers with significant interests in the United Kingdom and the British Empire. The inscription records the victory of the horse Caliph, owned by C. L. Johnstone and ridden by jockey C. Robinson, documenting a specific edition of the competition and preserving the memory of one of the protagonists of late 19th-century Irish steeplechasing.

Realizzato a Londra nel 1875 dall'argentiere Robert Hennell IV, questo importante trofeo fu commissionato quale Bankers Cup, premio destinato alle corse dell'Autumn Meeting dello Shanghai Race Club, una delle più prestigiose manifestazioni ippiche dell'Estremo Oriente britannico. Il trofeo costituisce una significativa testimonianza della presenza britannica nella Shanghai del XIX secolo, unendo il prestigio dell'argenteria vittoriana alla storia delle corse ippiche e della comunità internazionale che animava la città negli anni del suo massimo sviluppo economico

La Bankers Cup era offerta dai principali istituti bancari operanti nella Shanghai internazionale, a testimonianza del ruolo centrale della finanza nello sviluppo della città quale grande emporio commerciale dell'Asia orientale. L'iscrizione incisa sul corpo del rinfrescatoio ricorda la vittoria del cavallo Ravenshoe, di proprietà di John R. Bromley e Septimus Daly, montato dal fantino J. E. Walter.

Made in London in 1875 by the silversmith Robert Hennell IV, this important trophy was commissioned as the Bankers Cup, a prize awarded at the Autumn Meeting of the Shanghai Race Club, one of the most prestigious horse-racing events in the British Far East. The trophy represents a significant testament to the British presence in 19th-century Shanghai, combining the prestige of Victorian silverware with the history of horse racing and of the international community that shaped the city during the height of its economic development.



The Bankers Cup was presented by the leading banking institutions operating in international Shanghai, reflecting the central role of finance in the city’s growth as a major commercial hub of East Asia. The inscription engraved on the body of the wine cooler commemorates the victory of the horse Ravenshoe, owned by John R. Bromley and Septimus Daly, and ridden by jockey J. E. Walter.

Intended for the Ladies Team Race and presented by W. T. Wilby Esq., it bears on the reverse the engraved names of the winners from 1930 to 1937, including the London Society of East Anglians and the London Cornish Association, organisations dedicated to promoting sporting and recreational activities for London’s regional communities.
