APULIAN RED-FIGURE PANATHENAIC AMPHORA

Large amphora decored on both sides. On one side, there is the depiction of a winged Eros, seated on a support which is covered by a drapery. The character is richly adorned with a necklace, bracelet and shoes and he is holding a mirror in his left hand. On the knees, a small stair. On the opposite side, a female head, with a sakkos with radiant elements, earrings and necklace. The secondary decorative patterns are composed by: large palmettes and tendrils under the handles; a zig zag band wich runs under the characters; a stylized petals, a wavy line under a opened palmetta, on the neck; a laurel tendril on the rim. Intact, only a minor chipping on body and some insignificant discoloration. Provenance: English private collection; formerly in the collection of Dr. W.M., Schweinfurt 1970s - 1980s.
