Dopo aver fondato la leggendaria agenzia Magnum, Capa decide nel 1948 di documentare la nascita dello Stato di Israele. Il reportage fotografico verrà pubblicato nel 1950 con le note di Irwin Shaw. Capa, il cui cognome era Friedmann, percorre per due anni Israele ritraendo la vita dei nuovi immigrati provenienti da tutto il mondo.
