Sculpted alabaster bust of Diana with a turned base (33x60x28 cm) (defects, missing parts, and restorations)
This is a reproduction derived from the famous Diana of Versailles, or Artemis the Huntress, a Roman marble sculpture from the Imperial era (1st–2nd century AD), which is itself a copy of a lost Greek bronze attributed to Leochares (4th century BC). The full-length statue was gifted by Pope Paul IV to King Henry II of France in 1556 and installed at the Palace of Fontainebleau, before being moved by Louis XIV to the Palace of Versailles, from which it takes its name. Today, the original masterpiece is preserved at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
