L'invenzione di questo soggetto si deve a Guglielmo della Porta, che lo disegnò intorno al 1570, rifacendosi a sua volta a dei disegni realizzati da Michelangelo. La prima realizzazione derivata da questo disegno fu un bassorilievo d'argento realizzato da Rodrigo de León nel 1581 per una pax conservata nel Tesoro della Cattedrale di Cordova. Nei decenni successivi il soggetto fu ripreso da una vasta produzione di placchette di bronzo, quindi da molti dipinti eseguiti soprattutto in Italia, nelle Fiandre e in Germania.

This subject was first conceived by Guglielmo della Porta, who drew it around 1570, drawing in turn on drawings by Michelangelo. The first work derived from this drawing was a silver bas-relief created by Rodrigo de León in 1581 for a pax now housed in the Treasury of Córdoba Cathedral. In the decades that followed, the subject was taken up in a vast production of bronze plaques, and subsequently in numerous paintings produced mainly in Italy, Flanders and Germany.
