I colori caldi e la sobrietà di riflessi dei fiori, il ductus pittorico caratterizzato da larghe pennellate decise rifinite con filamenti di luce, ricordano ravvicinatamente le opere floreali di Petruzzi. I peculiari volti e le movenze dei putti, quanto i loro morbidi gli incarnati ravvivati da pallidi rossori, inducono a ricondurre l'opera al maestro senese.
Istruito all'arte pittorica da Francesco Vanni, Astolfo fu uno dei principali artisti del suo tempo nella città di Siena, operando anche a Spoleto e a Roma. In ambito professionale collaborò con Ventura Salimbeni e con Pietro Sorri.

Inscribed at the upper part "Adducentur regi virgines post eam", from Psalm 44: "Behind her, virgins will be led to the king."
The warm palette and restrained highlights of the flowers, together with the painterly handling characterised by broad, confident brushstrokes refined with filaments of light, closely recall Petrazzi’s floral compositions. The distinctive features and movements of the putti, as well as their soft flesh tones enlivened by pale touches of pink, further suggest an attribution to the Sienese master.
