The trophy was made for the individual snooker championship of the North East Branch of the Working Mens Club & Institute Union (CIU), the most important British federation of working mens recreational clubs, founded in 1862. In addition to promoting social and cultural activities, the CIU organised an extensive programme of regional and national sporting competitions (billiards, snooker, darts, dominoes, bowls, etc.), awarding perpetual trophies to its various regional branches.
