Il trofeo fu realizzato per il campionato individuale di snooker della North East Branch della Working Men's Club & Institute Union (CIU), la più importante federazione britannica dei circoli ricreativi operai, fondata nel 1862. Oltre a promuovere attività sociali e culturali, il CIU organizzava un vastissimo calendario di competizioni sportive regionali e nazionali (biliardo, snooker, freccette, domino, bowling ecc.), assegnando trofei perpetui alle diverse branche territoriali

The trophy was made for the individual snooker championship of the North East Branch of the Working Mens Club & Institute Union (CIU), the most important British federation of working mens recreational clubs, founded in 1862. In addition to promoting social and cultural activities, the CIU organised an extensive programme of regional and national sporting competitions (billiards, snooker, darts, dominoes, bowls, etc.), awarding perpetual trophies to its various regional branches.
