Il trofeo fu assegnato in occasione delle Ballingange Steeple-Chases della stagione 1890-1891, manifestazione ippica irlandese dedicata alle corse a ostacoli (steeplechase), disciplina che nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento costituiva uno degli eventi sportivi e mondani più seguiti dell'Irlanda. Inserite nel circuito del National Hunt, le riunioni di Ballingange richiamavano proprietari, allevatori e appassionati, affiancando, su scala locale, i più prestigiosi meeting di Punchestown e Fairyhouse.

La Suburban Cup fu offerta da John A. Ralli, esponente della celebre famiglia Ralli, dinastia di commercianti e finanzieri di origine greca con importanti interessi nel Regno Unito e nell'Impero britannico. L'iscrizione ricorda la vittoria del cavallo Caliph, appartenente a C. L. Johnstone e montato dal fantino C. Robinson, documentando un'edizione della competizione e conservando la memoria di uno dei protagonisti delle corse a ostacoli irlandesi di fine XIX secolo

The trophy was awarded on the occasion of the Ballingange Steeple-Chases of the 1890–1891 season, an Irish horse-racing event dedicated to steeplechase competitions, a discipline which in the second half of the 19th century represented one of the most popular sporting and social events in Ireland. Part of the National Hunt circuit, the Ballingange meetings attracted owners, breeders and enthusiasts, standing alongside, on a local scale, the more prestigious gatherings at Punchestown and Fairyhouse.



The Suburban Cup was presented by John A. Ralli, a member of the renowned Ralli family, a dynasty of Greek-origin merchants and financiers with significant interests in the United Kingdom and the British Empire. The inscription records the victory of the horse Caliph, owned by C. L. Johnstone and ridden by jockey C. Robinson, documenting a specific edition of the competition and preserving the memory of one of the protagonists of late 19th-century Irish steeplechasing.
