Nel corso della lunga tournée americana dell’Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, il 15 gennaio 1921 Arturo Toscanini si trovava a Philadelphia, una delle città nelle quali la comunità italiana era più numerosa e culturalmente attiva.

La tournée, iniziata nell’ottobre del 1920, rappresentò un’impresa musicale e organizzativa eccezionale. Dopo una serie di concerti in Italia, Toscanini e i musicisti della Scala salparono da Napoli alla volta degli Stati Uniti a bordo del piroscafo Presidente Wilson.

Il viaggio si protrasse per 237 giorni, dal 23 ottobre 1920 al 16 giugno 1921, durante i quali l’Orchestra della Scala tenne 125 concerti in 68 città, affrontando due traversate dell’Atlantico e circa 24.000 chilometri in treno. Anche il viaggio ebbe i suoi momenti pittoreschi: al mal di mare Toscanini suggerì di porre rimedio brindando con il vin santo donatogli da Gabriele D’Annunzio.

Negli Stati Uniti la presenza della Scala e di Toscanini assunse un significato che andava oltre il semplice avvenimento musicale. Per le numerose comunità italiane d’America, l’arrivo dell’orchestra del più celebre teatro italiano rappresentava un motivo di orgoglio e un’occasione per riaffermare il legame con il Paese d’origine.

È in questo clima di entusiasmo e ammirazione che, il 15 gennaio 1921, i musicisti italiani di Philadelphia vollero rendere omaggio al Maestro con una coppa con dedica

Un omaggio che, a distanza di oltre un secolo, conserva la memoria di una delle più straordinarie imprese musicali dell’epoca e dell’ammirazione tributata a Toscanini dalla comunità musicale italiana d’America.

During the long American tour of the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala, on 15 January 1921 Arturo Toscanini was in Philadelphia, one of the cities with the largest and most culturally active Italian communities.

The tour, which began in October 1920, represented an exceptional musical and organisational achievement. After a series of concerts in Italy, Toscanini and the musicians of La Scala sailed from Naples to the United States aboard the steamship Presidente Wilson.

The journey lasted 237 days, from 23 October 1920 to 16 June 1921, during which the La Scala Orchestra gave 125 concerts in 68 cities, undertaking two Atlantic crossings and travelling approximately 24,000 kilometres by train. The voyage itself also had its picturesque moments: when faced with seasickness, Toscanini suggested a remedy of toasting with the vin santo given to him by Gabriele D’Annunzio.

In the United States, the presence of La Scala and Toscanini took on a significance that went beyond a mere musical event. For the numerous Italian communities in America, the arrival of the orchestra of Italy’s most celebrated theatre represented a source of pride and an opportunity to reaffirm their connection with their country of origin.

It was in this atmosphere of enthusiasm and admiration that, on 15 January 1921, the Italian musicians of Philadelphia wished to pay tribute to the Maestro with a presentation cup bearing a commemorative inscription.

A tribute which, more than a century later, preserves the memory of one of the most extraordinary musical enterprises of the period and of the admiration bestowed upon Toscanini by the Italian-American musical community.
