La Hill Cup fu istituita come premio delle Maze Races, storiche corse ippiche disputate presso Maze, nei pressi di Lisburn, tra le più antiche d'Irlanda. Offerta da Lord Arthur Hill, esponente della famiglia dei Marchesi di Downshire, riflette il ruolo di questa casata nel patrocinio dell'attività ippica locale. L'antico campo di gara del Maze costituisce il nucleo storico dell'odierno Down Royal Racecourse, ancora oggi uno dei principali ippodromi irlandesi

The Hill Cup was established as the prize for the Maze Races, the historic horse races held at Maze, near Lisburn, among the oldest in Ireland. Presented by Lord Arthur Hill, a member of the family of the Marquesses of Downshire, it reflects the family's longstanding patronage of local horse racing. The historic racecourse at Maze forms the nucleus of the present-day Down Royal Racecourse, which remains one of Ireland's principal racecourses.
