Il soggetto nasce grazie ad una incisione di Marcantonio Raimondi su probabile disegno di Raffaello. Grazie alla divulgazione delle stampe di Raimondi, ritroviamo questo soggetto molto diffuso sia in Italia che nelle Fiandre. Tra gli esempi più importanti segnaliamo l'opera di Hans Rottenhammer, il quale dipinse Bimbi in cerchio che danzano, opera oggi conservata all'Alte Pinakothek di Monaco di Baviera.

The subject was inspired by an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi, probably based on a drawing by Raphael. Thanks to the dissemination of Raimondi's prints, this subject became very popular in both Italy and Flanders. Among the most important examples is the work by Hans Rottenhammer, who painted Children Dancing in a Circle, now preserved in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
