Il Vaso di Warwick è un colossale vaso in marmo risalente al II secolo d.C. Fu rinvenuto in frammenti nel 1770 sul fondo di un lago presso la Villa di Adriano, nei pressi di Roma e fu acquistato da Sir William Hamilton, all'epoca Ambasciatore britannico a Napoli. Hamilton a sua volta lo vendette, ormai restaurato, al suo parente, George Greville, II conte di Warwick, che lo collocò nei giardini del Castello di Warwick. Il vaso era stato inciso da Piranesi nel 1778, e queste stampe fornirono l'ispirazione per le versioni del vaso in argento e argento dorato durante il periodo della Reggenza.

Riguardo al suo vaso di marmo, il conte di Warwick scrisse: «Ho costruito una nobile serra e... vi ho collocato un vaso, considerato il più bel reperto dell'arte greca esistente per dimensioni e bellezza». Il vaso, tuttavia, ebbe un critico. L'onorevole John Byng, in seguito quinto visconte di Torrington e autore di una serie di diari affascinanti e a tratti irascibili sui suoi viaggi attraverso l'Inghilterra, parlò così del monumento romano quando descrisse la sua visita al Castello di Warwick: «Il cortile superiore è circondato da antiche mura e torrette, ricoperte di edera; la saracinesca è abbassata; e nulla disonora il gusto dell'antichità, se non una volgare vegetazione»

Le Winchester Races, disputate sullo storico ippodromo di Worthy Down, nell'Hampshire, figurano tra i più antichi e prestigiosi meeting ippici dell'Inghilterra meridionale. Documentate già dal XVII secolo, costituivano uno degli appuntamenti più attesi del calendario sportivo e mondano britannico, richiamando aristocratici, grandi proprietari di purosangue, ufficiali dell'esercito e membri della famiglia reale. Le giornate di corse erano accompagnate da ricevimenti, balli e occasioni di rappresentanza che trasformavano Winchester nel centro della vita sociale della contea.
La presente coppa ricorda la vittoria del purosangue Snowbird nelle Winchester Races del 1819.

The Winchester Races, held at the historic Worthy Down racecourse in Hampshire, rank among the oldest and most prestigious racing meetings in southern England. Documented as early as the seventeenth century, they represented one of the most anticipated events in the British sporting and social calendar, attracting aristocrats, leading thoroughbred owners, army officers and members of the Royal Family. The race days were accompanied by receptions, balls and ceremonial occasions that transformed Winchester into the centre of the county's social life.

The present cup commemorates the victory of the thoroughbred Snowbird at the Winchester Races of 1819.

Coperchio con presa in forma della dea Atena con elmo e scudo a tuttotondo, fascia decorata da volti di Zeus entro elementi vegetali e anse ad ancore con cime intrecciate. Fusto a delfini attorcigliati a tuttotondo, decorato da onde stilizzate, stelle marine e spighe, base circolare sbalzata a conchiglie e coralli. Birmingham, 1871. L'imponente composizione e il ricco repertorio iconografico di gusto neo-greco e marino consentono di attribuire il disegno ad Auguste-Adolphe Willms (1827-1899), tra i principali designer della manifattura Elkington & Co., presso la quale operò come direttore artistico a partire dal 1859. Formatosi in Francia e autore di alcuni dei più importanti modelli presentati da Elkington alle Esposizioni Universali della seconda metà dell'Ottocento, Willms introdusse un linguaggio monumentale ispirato all'antichità classica, caratterizzato dall'impiego di figure allegoriche, sostegni zoomorfi e complessi programmi decorativi

The imposing composition and the rich iconographic repertoire of Neo-Greek and maritime inspiration allow the design to be attributed to Auguste-Adolphe Willms (1827–1899), one of the principal designers of the Elkington & Co. manufactory, where he served as artistic director from 1859. Trained in France and the creator of some of the most important models presented by Elkington at the Universal Exhibitions of the second half of the nineteenth century, Willms introduced a monumental language inspired by classical antiquity, characterised by the use of allegorical figures, zoomorphic supports and complex decorative schemes.
