Si ringrazia il professor Giuseppe Sava per le indicazioni fornite in merito all'origine e datazione dell'opera.

I due angeli risentono dell'estetica dei modelli rinascimentali lombardi. I loro volti tondi e rigonfi, invece, tanto quanto i loro capelli molto disciplinati denunciano un accento settentrionale, che ritroviamo ad esempio nella scultura di area tedesca. Queste componenti inducono ad attribuirli all'area alto lombarda, di primissimo Cinquecento, dove si assiste a fusioni artistiche, tra le culture lombarda, tirolese o svizzera, con esiti affini. L'assenza delle braccia probabilmente implica una loro funzione a reggere una corona o un altro attributo all'interno di un complesso scultoreo che è facile immaginare dovesse essere di eccelsa qualità.

We would like to thank Professor Giuseppe Sava for the information he provided regarding the origin and dating of the work.

The two angels reflect the aesthetics of Lombard Renaissance models. However, their round, swollen faces and very neat hair reveal a northern accent, which we find, for example, in German sculpture. These features lead us to attribute them to the upper Lombardy area in the early 16th century, where artistic fusions between Lombard, Tyrolean, and Swiss cultures produced similar results. The absence of arms probably implies that they were intended to hold a crown or other attribute within a sculptural complex that we can easily imagine to have been of the highest quality.
