Japan, Early 20th century
An unusual large-scale silk photograph portrait of General Nogi Maresuke. The military officer is wearing a World War I uniform and proudly displays his rank insignia and a medal of valor pinned to his chest. The star-shaped honor is attributed to the Order of the Rising Sun, Grand Cordon. This high distinction was awarded to brave and deserving military personnel for their services to the homeland by the Emperor of Japan in 1875. The black ink ideogram and red stamp are located on the left side.
