Lotto 49 Antonio Mancini (1852 - 1930)
"Portrait of a young girl". Oil on canvas. Size 48x37 cm. Signed lower left A. Mancini. Framed. The portrait is presented in virtuosic, strongly pastose brushwork, close to Impressionism, conveying a shimmering atmosphere. The painter is one of the most important artists of Italian modernism. After praising his youth drawings by Domenico Morelli (1823-1901), he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples at the age of twelve. Already at the age of 18 he exhibited to great acclaim at the Salon du Paris. Mancini was a member of the Verismo movement. He went to France in 1877, where he met Édouard Manet (1832-1883) and Edgar Degas (1834-1917), later he was a close friend of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) in London. Decorative map including Sicily, Sardinia, Malta and a part of the kingdom of Naples, with a large and elaborate cartouche, and at the bottom corners two panels with views of Messina and Catania with Mount Etna in full eruption. Lotto 53 Magini, Giovanni (1555-1617)
"Map of North and South America". Year 1713. Copper-engraved map. Size 13.5x17.5 cm, on sheet with text measuring 29.3x20.5 cm. First appearing in Magini's 1596 edition of Ptolemy's Geography, based largely Ortelius with the characteristic bulge along the west coast of South America. The present example was published in Alphonse Lasor a Varea's "Universus terrarum orbis scriptorum calami delineates" in 1713. Provenance: Private Collection, Amsterdam.
