Lotto 168 1768, Canada, lettera da Montreal per Amsterdam dell'8 agosto 1768, viaggiata con nave da New York per Falmouth/Londra e qui giunta il 4 novembre dopo 88 giorni di viaggio, attraversando i Grandi Laghi e l’Oceano. Al verso è indicata la tariffa espressa in currency, pagata per il trasporto: 3,6 cy, poco più di 3 sterline. Sempre al verso, il manoscritto del forwarder “Londres le 4 nov.re 1768, Sous Couvert”. Straordinario documento, uno degli ultimi viaggi in questo periodo dal porto di New York, prima di utilizzare la rotta per l’Europa via Halifax. Infatti, il mittente specifica che “...depuis le mois d’Avril plus aisee mettonde d’envoyer des lettres dans ça pays est par les vaisseaux qui partant da Londre p. le Canada jusques 7.bre alors il faut ecrire par le paquet de New York.” Il mittente, nel testo, scrive al destinatario che la sua lettera del 30 marzo precedente, l’ha ricevuta a Fort William Henry, sul lago George. Fort Henry era un avanposto inglese situato al confine tra il territorio britannico di New York e i possedimenti francesi del Nord. In seguito al conflitto tra inglesi e francesi, dove ognuno dei due contendenti realizzava fortini per difendere il proprio territorio nel Nuovo Mondo, dal 1753 la guerra si protrasse per nove anni. Nell’agosto del 1757 Fort Henry fu assediato dalle truppe francesi appoggiate da centinaia di indiani appartenenti a circa 18 tribù diverse. Il forte, che poteva contenere circa 500 uomini, per circa una settimana fu circondato, bombardato, dato alle fiamme, e poi lasciato alla furia degli indiani, che non intendevano ritornare nei loro accampamenti a mani vuote. Fu un massacro. Furono trucidati oltre 150 soldati e civili disarmati, mentre i sopravvissuti si rifugiarono, terrorizzati, a Fort Edward, non lontano dal luogo dell’eccidio. Dal testo di questa lettera risulta che Fort Henry fu ricostruito, almeno parzialmente, per servire da Post Office e centro di comunicazione, uno dei primi nello Stato di New York, forse prima di Albany costituito nel 1775.
