Title pages with printer's device, double portrait of the author on the verso of pigreco4 paper in first volume and on the verso of star6 in second volume, additional titles with architectural border at the beginning of each book, 7 folding plates, 83 numbered illustrations, numerous figures in text, initials and headpieces, all in woodcut (removed stamp on verso of title, upper internal corner of title repaired, the third and fourth leaves lightly trimmed at the upper margin, occasional spotting, browning and soiling, few small tears repaired, the plate with the "Disegno del territorio" with slight wear in the lower margin). Copia in bella legatura di questa prima edizione dell'importante lavoro enciclopedico di Cardano. La copia è arricchita dall'intervento di un censore coevo che dichiara al frontespizio "Hic liber correctus est ex indice librorum expurgandorum" e che ha censurato (senza impedire la lettura del testo) tutte le parti ritenute eterodosse accompagnando in molti casi l'intervento con una motivazione scritta a margine; interventi utili per studiare nel dettaglio le motivazioni che spinsero la Chiesa a iscrivere l'opera nell'indice dei libri proibiti.

Folio (313 x 215mm). Diagrammi e illustrazioni nel testo (8 forellini di tarlo che interessano il frontespizio e gran parte dell'opera senza però sostanziali perdite di testo, lievi macchie al frontespizio, lievi bruniture). Pelle di scrofa coeva decorata a secco a cornici floreali e con icone di santi su assi di legno, fermagli originali in ottone, tracce di antico tassello cartaceo al dorso (segni di usura). Provenienza: iscrizione coeva al frontespizio: "Caputinorum Constantiae".

A fine copy in blindstamped pigskin of this first edition of Cardano's important encyclopedic work. The copy is enriched by the intervention of a contemporary censor who declares on the title page "Hic liber correctus est ex index librorum expurgandorum" and who has censored (without preventing the reading of the text) all the parts considered heterodox, accompanying in many cases the intervention with a written motivation in the margin; the interventions are useful to study in detail the reasons that led the Church to register the work in the index of prohibited books.

Folio (313 x 215mm). Diagrams and illustrations in the text (8 wormholes affecting the title page and most of the work without substantial loss of text, slight stains on title, light browning). Contemporary blindstamped pigskin on wooden boards, with floral borders and with icons of saints, original metal clasps, traces of ancient paper label on spine (signs of wear). Provenance: contemporary inscription on title: "Caputinorum Constantiae".

Rarissima prima edizione del De Purpura e del Pars Altera. Quest'opera di Fabio Colonna, membro dell'Accademia dei Lincei, è di particolare importanza sia per la storia della botanica che della tipografia in quanto è il primo botanista ad abbandonare le incisioni in legno per quelle in rame, che gli consentivano maggior finezza di dettaglio nella rappresentazione delle piante.

Frontespizi incisi in rame con gli stemmi dei dedicatari, iniziali e fregi xilografici, 152 incisioni in rame a piena pagina di cui 131 di piante e le rimanenti di vita marina, insetti e un ippopotamo (manca ritratto dell'autore sebbene Nissen non ne menzioni la presenza, minute note a margine in penna, lievi tracce di polvere e macchioline sparse, minuscoli fori di tarlo sparsi). This work by Fabio Colonna, a member of the Accademia dei Lincei, is of particular importance both for the history of botany and typography as he is the first botanist to abandon wood engravings for copper engravings, which allowed him greater refinement of detail in the representation of the plants.
